Not all of us are born with perfect teeth, and in some cases our smiles need a bit of help to achieve perfection. In this case cosmetic dentistry is just the thing to maintain or build a stunning white smile.
One dental cosmetic procedure we often recommend at Simply Smiles is tooth bonding. For small damage and imperfections dental bonding can often be the simplest and most economical answer.
If you are looking to improve your smile, at Simply Smiles we are experts in recommending the best and most appropriate treatments, including dental bonding. Give us a call!
How Can Dental Bonding Help You?
Here are a few simple problems that we fix routinely with dental bonding:
Chipped Teeth – Millions of people chip teeth every year. If the chip is small, dental bonding can often do the job at a fraction of the time and cost of other treatments.
Cracked Teeth – Teeth can be cracked by hard foods, sports injuries, tooth grinding, and age. So what do you do?
A small crack can be filled with our bonding material, which repairs the tooth and protects the inside from bacteria.
Cavities – Tooth decay is a different issue with a similar solution. Composite resin can fill some cavities so well that others may not have any idea which of your teeth had a cavity.
Amalgam Fillings – Dental bonding is equally effective as a replacement for old dental fillings. Whether you have amalgam, gold, or a previous composite filling, we can use our bonding material to replace it when that filling becomes worn down, chipped, or cracked.
Reshape Teeth – Tooth bonding can literally “reshape” teeth, brighten them, ‘lengthen’ them, and fill gaps between them.
The Steps of Tooth Bonding – Because it does not involve a dental laboratory, tooth bonding can usually be accomplished in one visit to Simply Smiles. The entire procedure typically takes 30 minutes to an hour.
What is the Dental Bonding Treatment?
Dental bonding starts out as a paste made of composite resin. Our dentists prepare your tooth by removing surface structure that is weakened by decay or marked by stains. This not only removes damaged material, but also allows a stronger bond to the tooth. We match the resin to the color and translucency of your tooth, sometimes using several layers to get just the right tone. We carefully sculpt the composite resin to the perfect shape. Finally, it is hardened and bonded in place using a special light.
Care and Feeding of your Bonded Teeth
Although dental bonding is designed to last, often up to a decade or more, you still need to look after and maintain your bonded tooth to ensure it lasts for years to come.
Here are some tips for better dental bond care:
Avoid using the bonded teeth to bite into hard things such as ice or hard candies. This is particularly important for teeth bonded in the front.
When your teeth have just recently been bonded, try to avoid eating hard and chewy foods.
Avoid acidic and citric foods such as pineapple, tomatoes, and vinegar.
Limit your intake of tobacco, red wine, coffee, tea, berries, pasta sauces and other foods that can stain the teeth and resin.
Use regular toothpaste, not baking-soda based or abrasive ones.
Of course, you should also keep up your normal dental routine – brushing twice a day, flossing once a day, and seeing your Simply Smiles dentist on a regular basis.
